FAQ
Do I need a partner?
You do not need a partner to take classes, or to social dance in general. We rotate partners in class so you get the chance to practice your social dance skills with different partners.
Can I pick either dance role?
Traditionally, the follow is considered the female role and the lead male. However, you are encouraged to take a class in whichever role you desire, so long as you’ve completed its prerequisites in the same role. It is normal for skilled dancers to have learned both, since understanding one helps improve the other.
What clothes should I wear?
There is no dress code. Wear clothes you can move and sweat in. Avoid clothes and accessories that could get in the way of dancing with a partner and hair pieces that could poke someone’s eyes out.
What shoes should I wear?
No heels, hard soled shoes, dirty outdoor shoes, taped soles, or shoes that leave marks on the floor. Otherwise, any pair of lightweight flats with soles that are not grippy rubber will often work just fine. Your dance shoes need to give you a bit of slide so that you can twist and turn without stressing your ankles and knees. There are some brands that sell shoes specifically for dancers, such as Fuego and Taygra (popular with Brazilian zouk dancers). The Alpargata line of shoes from TOMS has also been popular with social dancers, though I don’t know if their updated soles are still good for dancing (definitely avoid the ones with thick rubber soles). Dance shoe socks (basically sock tubes) over a pair of sneakers may work in a pinch. You can also just wear thick socks, but stubbing your toes and getting stepped on without shoes can hurt.
What should I bring to class besides dance shoes?
If you haven’t already done so through email, make sure to bring your proof of COVID-19 vaccination (digital or paper). You may also wish to bring a water bottle and a sweat towel.
How should I prepare for class?
Just bring your clean and fresh, non-stinky self. Shower and brush your teeth, or otherwise use mouthwash, breath mints, and deodorant. Out of consideration for people with allergies, avoid perfume/cologne and strongly scented products.
I’m an experienced dancer, can I skip a prerequisite course?
Sorry, nope. The best and most important lessons are taught at the beginning, and substantial effort is taken to teach each course from a unique perspective so that even experienced dancers may benefit.
